Should I Consider Assisted Living near Cokato MN for My Father with Parkinson’s?

A Daughter’s story ” The benefit of Assisted Living for her father with Parkinson’s “

My father has recently been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and I am contemplating the benefits of an assisted living facility over leaving him at home alone. It won’t be easy for him to accept the news of moving into a facility at first but in the long run I believe it will be for the best.  While he is in the early stages of the disease, his condition will progressively worsen.Assisted Living near Cokato MN

Both my father and I have been learning about the disease and know it is a progressive disorder that affects the nervous system and movement.  It is a result of the loss of nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine.  Dopamine is acts as a “chemical messenger” that conveys signals to the parts of the brain that control movement and coordination. Symptoms of the disease include:

  • Tremors, which many times starts in the hands
  • Rigid muscles
  • Impaired posture and balance
  • Changes in speech
  • Loss of automatic movement
  • Dementia

After researching assisted living, I have learned that many communities vary from facility to facility.  Living arrangements can be individual rooms, apartments, or shared quarters. The right facility will provide a home-like setting that promotes independence but offers assistance to those who need it.  The services that seem to be offered within most of the facilities are:

  • Personal care, which includes assistance with bathing and dressing
  • They provide one to three meals a day
  • They monitor medication
  • Housekeeping and laundry
  • 24-hour emergency care
  • Social and recreational activities

While my father can still perform these daily functions, I fear the day when his disease progresses to a stage that leaves him frustrated and unsafe while trying to perform these everyday tasks. I’m hoping that an assisted living facility will help him transition into the day when he needs help.  Having other residents and staff to socialize with will benefit him more than sitting at home alone feeling depressed.

Working long hours and raising a family in already limited space has left me feeling guilty about not being able to personally care for my father.  However, in researching various facilities, I believe he will be in good hands.  Plus, a facility that allows ample time for visiting makes it easy for me to check in on him with my hectic schedule.

I’m sure there are assisted living nightmares out there but if you do your research, visit the facility a few times, talk to the staff and other residents, and ask the right questions, you will find that an assisted living facility could be the answer to your prayer.
